Neural Notes: The US keeps proving it can switch off Australia’s AI

A US export order cut Australians off Anthropic’s top models and slowed OpenAI’s next. What does that mean for Australia’s ‘sovereign AI’ plans?

On a Friday afternoon in June, the US demonstrated just how little control Australia has over access to the AI models we’re increasingly reliant on.

Anthropic received an order to suspend access to its most powerful models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all foreign nationals. 

Within hours, those models disappeared for users outside US jurisdiction – only days after Mythos was first made available.
