Minimum wage increase: Employers, unions split on plan to lift lowest incomes

Australia’s small business lobby says any increase to the minimum wage should be pushed back to December, as soaring fuel prices and the introduction of payday superannuation are already set to slug hard-hit traders.
The Fair Work Commission (FWC) is conducting its annual wage review for 2026, which determines both the national minimum wage and the minimum wages in modern awards, setting the baseline conditions for millions of workers nationwide.
Its decision usually comes into effect on July 1 each year, but the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) says the FWC should defer any hike by six months.
