The federal government must not be allowed to discriminate against suppliers without union agreements
Labor’s latest workplace relations bill could tilt government procurement in favour of unionised businesses at the expense of SMEs.
The federal government has introduced a bill into Parliament to amend the Fair Work Act to give it free rein to favour suppliers with union-endorsed enterprise agreements. Businesses that do not have union agreements are more likely to be small and medium-sized businesses.
The government’s proposal is included in a bill that is labelled as being about ‘building cooperative workplaces’. This fails to recognise that many thousands of SMEs have highly cooperative workplaces and only a very small proportion have agreements with unions.
