Albanese grabs Australia’s AI agenda, parks copyright and data centre decisions
Albanese is centralising AI in his own office, but his announcement speech leaves Australia’s copyright and data centre rules unresolved.
Back in December, Australia’s long-awaited National AI Plan was unveiled, and it was quite clear on a few things.
There would be no standalone AI Act, no mandatory guardrails, and a reliance on “technology‑neutral” laws and existing regulators to manage the risks.
AI would be folded into privacy, consumer and safety regimes, with sector regulators improvising guidance as new issues emerged.
